Our Approach

Our classes are small. Students receive a lot of individual attentions.

First thing we want focus on are good alignment and body mechanics. This way, we avoid strains on our joints.

Second thing we want to focus on is to coordinate breathing with movements, because breathes fuel and refresh the body.

We want to bring awareness inside our bodies and strive to move in an efficient and effortless way. Each movements in the form is explained, from placements, angles, weight transfer, to martial applications.

The taiji form is a vehicle, not an achievement. We study the form to improve ourselves, not just to memorise a set of choreographed movements.

In our lineage, there are four aspects to our practice.

  • Exercise
  • It limbers and tones the muscles as it teaches one how to let go of tension. It is a form of moving meditation which relaxes both mind and body while honing concentration.
  • Medicine
  • For those rehabilitating from chronic illness, hospitalization or injury, by releasing and increasing the natural flow of breath and blood, the organs, tissues and cells are cleansed of toxins and saturated with vitality.
  • Boxing
  • Taiji style of boxing is for those who pursue the way of yielding in the face of force. Taiji teaches us how we may return this force with subtlety and accuracy without sacrifice of our integrity.
  • Philosophy
  • It encourages empathy, openness and a creative/receptive balance of thought and action.

In a typical class, we usually start with some warm-up exercises and stretches. Then we do a simple breathing movement set, called the "Breathe Set" that illustrates the principles in the long form. Followed by some walking drills or push hand. Part of the class is dedicated to individual work, where each student work on their own progress while the teacher comes around and give instructions. Then as a group, we do the long form together.
